Introduction : In September 2013, within the St John Emergency Clinical Hospital, a department of Surgical Oncology was created. One of the main focus of the department was to start liver surgery in our hospital.
Methods : Between October 2013 and December 2019, 127 hepatectomies for primary and secondary liver tumors, were performed in our clinic. Laparoscopic liver resection followed later, starting from 2016. In 2018 a member of our team completed a short-term fellowship in Bundang Hospital SNUH South Korea. We compared the cases in 2017 with those operated in 2019 in order to measure the progress.
Results : As compared to the cases performed in 2017, an increase in complexity as well as a decrease of operating time was noticed. There were no significant differences in the postoperative course. As presented in the attached video, the technique for left lateral resection was further standardized.
Conclusions : Case selection and surgical skills were improved after the fellowship. In order to increase the number of cases resolved laparoscopically and to grow the rate of complex or major hepatectomies, training and enriching team skills and knowledge must be concurrent with technical improvements.
